Halfway Crooks Beirgarten

Designed while Holden and Emily were at Square Feet Studio, the Halfway Crooks Biergarten extends the brewery's spirit of hospitality into the landscape, transforming a previously undeveloped lawn into one of southeast Atlanta's most beloved outdoor gathering places. Anchored by two mature pecan trees and a sprawling oak, the site had long captured the owners' imaginations, who envisioned a European-inspired beer garden where light pilsners and lagers could be enjoyed in the shade of the canopy while neighbors gathered for live music, outdoor films, and soccer matches. Rather than imposing upon the landscape, the design allows the trees to define the garden. Shipping containers, lightly set on point foundations to protect their critical root systems, form a perimeter “garden wall” housing the supporting functions of the biergarten while preserving the openness and character of the site. Playful arched openings, paired with colorful branding by Family Bros., gently disrupt the disciplined modularity of the industrial boxes with moments of warmth and surprise. Echoing the language of the arches, a prefabricated quonset hut shelters a stage and outdoor screen, chamfering the corner of the site to draw performances back into the garden. The result is a neighborhood room where cheery voices, foaming lagers, and everyday life unfold beneath the trees.
