Woodland Avenue House

While at Square Feet Studio, Holden worked closely with Kate and Andy Lee on an addition to their home to accommodate their growing family and an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) to house Andy’s professional photography studio. Together, the two buildings shape a shared courtyard that allows family life and creative work to exist comfortably alongside one another. Designed for both everyday routines and frequent gatherings, the courtyard provides a place where children can play within view while the house, studio, and garden remain seamlessly connected through generous operable doors and windows. The form of the 750-square-foot studio emerged from the interplay between Atlanta’s zoning constraints and the practical needs of Andy’s photography practice. A simple rectangular volume with an asymmetrical roof gable, the studio is organized around a double-height workspace filled with soft northern light, alongside a photogenic kitchen tucked beneath an editing loft. A single corner window offers quiet views back to the courtyard and the family’s daily life beyond. Clad in unfinished cypress, the building is intended to weather gracefully, its ever-silvering patina marking the passage of seasons alongside the life of the family it was designed to serve.
