The Lodge, Building D

505 Moreland is a four-story mixed-use building completing the western edge of East Atlanta’s historic Lodge Block with neighborhood retail and upper-level office space. Together with the restoration of the Historic EA Minor Masonic Lodge, the project helps repair the urban fabric between the sister neighborhoods of East Atlanta Village and Ormewood Park while establishing a more durable and civic-minded vision for the future of the Moreland Avenue corridor. The building also provides a permanent home for Purpose Built Communities, a nonprofit organization dedicated to neighborhood revitalization. The architecture is grounded in the enduring qualities of masonry construction. A restrained brick façade is enriched through carefully composed bands of glazed green brick that abstract familiar elements of historic architecture—including rustication, window surrounds, friezes, and cornices—into a disciplined contemporary composition. Developed through a value engineering exercise that prioritized material expression over applied complexity, the design demonstrates how architectural richness can emerge through proportion, craft, and the careful composition of a largely planar wall. Generous sapele storefronts establish a warm, finely crafted edge at the street, reinforcing the importance of material quality at the pedestrian scale. Landscape design by Day and Day Studio completes the public plaza shared with the Historic EA Minor Masonic Lodge, binding the two buildings into a cohesive civic ensemble. Together, the projects offer a hopeful model for the continued evolution of Moreland Avenue—one rooted not in spectacle, but in enduring materials, thoughtful urbanism, and the patient repair of the city.
